Before Split, there was Salona.
Just a few kilometres from the city centre lie the impressive remains of Salona, the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and one of the largest cities on the eastern Adriatic over 2,000 years ago.
Today, visitors can walk through the ruins of a once thriving city, past the amphitheatre, basilicas, city walls and early Christian cemeteries and experience the place where the story of Split truly begins. Scan the QR codes across the site and watch as augmented reality reconstructions bring ancient Salona back to life.
Surrounded by open landscapes, Salona is also a perfect photo spot and a beautiful escape from the crowds of the old town. A visit here is not just a trip to archaeological ruins. It is a chance to discover the true origins of the city and the spirit of Dalmatia.
Relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy the sparkling Adriatic at Žnjan Beach ā a state-of-the-art modern city beach. Grab a coffee at one of the beach cafĆ©s, play sports on the open courts, or let the kids have fun at the playgrounds. Itās the perfect stop to unwind and enjoy a full range of activities or slow down and relax, like a true local.
