Just a few kilometres from the city centre lie the impressive remains of Salona, the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and one of the largest cities on the eastern Adriatic over 2,000 years ago. Today, visitors can walk through the ruins of a once thriving city, past the amphitheatre, basilicas, city walls and early Christian cemeteries and experience the place where the story of Split truly begins.
