Split City

Located in the heart of Dalmatia, Split is its biggest city and main port. It is best connected with the surrounding islands, so it makes a perfect stop between visiting other parts of the Mediterranean. Split has a long and rich history dating all the way back to the Greeks, but the most preserved part of history is the one from the Roman era from the first few centuries AD.

Diocletian Palace

The symbol of this city is Diocletian Palace. It is the place where everything started and from which Split spread onto the rest of the peninsula. The palace was built in 305 AD by Roman emperor Diocletian. It has four gates: golden, silver, bronze, and iron. At the heart of it is Peristil, a place where the emperor once appeared in front of the citizens. Left to it was once Jupiter’s temple, but once the Christians overtook the palace it was destroyed as well as everything else that had to do with the Roman religion. It is now the basilica of Saint Dujam, mostly famous for the belltower next to it, “Sveti Duje”. You can visit the basilica and climb up the belltower. The view will take your breath away!

West of the city is Split’s famous hill, Marjan. South promenades are perfect for romantic night walks or morning sunbathing whilst drinking coffee at the first viewpoint. At the top of Marjan is another viewpoint that overlooks the whole city and towns around it. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this beautiful view!

Under Marjan are two parks, Sustipan and Zvončac. Sustipan is located at the cliff above Zvončac and once served as a city graveyard. Once its capacity has been reached, it became a park. It is a quiet, shady place perfect for walking, playing with kids, and enjoying the view of Split and the sea beneath you. Zvončac is a big park with a kid’s playground. Locals love to come here and play with their dogs and kids because it is very spacious. In the spring, daisies bloom all around the park, creating beautiful white-green scenery.

Split Beaches

Split has many great beaches in case you don’t want to leave the city and go looking for hidden coves and private beaches. Bačvice is a widely known sand beach next to the port. Warm and shallow sea, hot sand, and refreshing drinks all in one place! Don’t forget to try playing “picigin” an old game played by the locals. Like a volleyball in the water but played with a small ball in a circle. Another great beach is Obojena (which means Colored in English). It is a pebble beach west of Zvončac. The North side of Marjan has numerous hidden beaches approachable by foot or a boat, and Bene is a famous public beach 2 kilometers from Marjan’s gates.
